Samsung to launch 8G, 9G LCD operations in 2007, 2009

Leading electronics maker Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd has announced its plans to begin operation at its 8G TFT-LCD facility by the second half of 2007 while its 9G plant is slated to begin volume production by 2009.
According to Sang Wan Lee, president of Samsung's LCD Business, the company already has a land allocated for 8G, 9G and 10G TFT-LCD production at its LCD complex in Tangjeong.
Meanwhile, Japan-based manufacturer Sharp Corp. also announced that it has began the construction of its 8G facility. Operations at the 8G facility are scheduled to commence in October next year.
Samsung's 8G substrates measure 2,160-by-2,460mm while Sharp's substrates come in 2,160-by-2,400mm. Samsung's 8G facility will focus on manufacturing 40in and 46in TV panels while Sharp will produce mainly 45in and 52in TV panels.
